In both his roles, Alex focuses on the development of new technologies and services for older adults.

He has been conducting research in the field of technology to support older adults for the past 20 years and has published over 200 journal papers and abstracts in this field.

Alex is also very active in the rehabilitation engineering profession, currently as the Past-President for RESNA (Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America), and in 2014 he was named as a Fellow of RESNA which is one of the highest honours within this field. He was also named as a Fellow in CAHS (Canadian Academy of Health Science) in 2021 for his contributions to the health and well-being of older Canadians.

In 2022, he was recognized by the UN as one of the Healthy Ageing 50: Leaders transforming the world to be a better place to grow older.
